Mordialloc Creek and the pier are the heart of the old fishing village, and the streets right around them still have the small weatherboard cottages that came with it — tight footprints, timber floors, and rooms you can just about touch both walls of. Those cottages are their own kind of job. There's no roof cavity worth speaking of and not much wall to work with, so pipe runs have to be planned to stay short and discreet, and outdoor unit placement gets tricky on a narrow block hard up against the neighbour. We often end up bracket-mounting the condenser or tucking it down the side where it can still breathe. Sizing on a small cottage is usually modest, but a lot of them have been renovated with a glassy open extension at the rear that changes the load completely, so we size to what's actually there. Away from the creek, Mordialloc has plenty of post-war brick and newer homes on more generous blocks that are straightforward. Being on the bay, salt is a factor near the foreshore and Attenborough Park, so units get sited with the coastal air in mind. The older cottages frequently need a switchboard upgrade too. It's a suburb where the character homes are small and fiddly, and getting a clean job in a tight space is most of the skill.
