Tecoma is a small foothills suburb with an outsized story: in 2013 the community fought a two-year battle against a McDonald's built on Burwood Highway. The store went ahead and later closed, and the site is now a different tenant - but the fight put Tecoma on the map and the shopfronts along Burwood Highway carry a fairly strong independent-trader character as a result. Retail fit-out work here is our steady commercial run: cafes, a couple of small studios, the servos, and a few professional offices above the shops on the highway strip. Split systems in these shopfronts have to sit high on the wall - usually 2.6 to 2.8 metres - because the shops are old and the ceiling is tin-lined with pressed metal profiles, and we can't cassette-mount without ripping the ceiling out. We use a Fujitsu ASTG or Mitsubishi Heavy Industries SRK series wall-mount rated for wider air throw and we angle the louvre downward off the counter line so the barista doesn't cop the airstream all shift. Residential Tecoma climbs uphill from Burwood Highway toward Upwey and Kallista - the streets are short, the blocks are quarter-acre, and the houses are mostly 1960s cream brick or later brick veneer. Nothing unusual to install there, but the properties on the highway side get truck noise and dust off the road, so we always recommend a Mitsubishi Heavy or Toshiba head with a proper high-density F5 filter that the customer can pull and rinse.
